streff syndrome

Anxiety and stress can affect vision in all persons. In children, this may present as Streff Syndrome.

A child can present with functional vision problems: they may have reduced or blurred distance and/or near vision with no apparent cause. It can also affect eye hand coordination and a reduction in visual fields.

Parents and teachers will often notice a change in the academic progress and attention and focus a child may be having. They may begin to struggle academically and make unusual mistakes. The issue is closely related to the brain and the way the vision is processed within it and it is very important to investigate changes in children’s behaviour or ability at school and ensure their vision is not involved.

It is a condition which is mainly exhibited in young children going through periods of emotional or visual stress. Key identifiers include a lack of desire to complete.  Early diagnosis is the key to identifying the problem and assisting the child to regain their confidence.
